The economy is getting better.

Oh, wait. New report out today. Never mind, the economy is going down the toilet.

Lost jobs will never come back. If you had a good one in the old economy, enjoy the memory of it. You’ll never get another one.

Nonsense.

Phooey!

Yes, things are changing. And here’s a news flash: the way things used to be is never, ever going to come back.

What are we going to do?

If you are reading this, it’s because you have access to the Internet. In 2011, there were
2.3 billion Internet users and a world population of 6.7 billion. In 2020, it is estimated that there will be 5 billion Internet users.

What can you offer today to 2.3 billion people? And nearly twice as many more just eight years from now?

Oh, right…it’s all been done. There’s nothing else left to put out on the Internet that somebody hasn’t already been done.

Good thing Pinterest didn’t decide that was the case, considering there was already Instagram and Flickr out there. Good thing Yakkay didn’t decide that everybody who wore a bike helmet gave up fashion for safety. Good thing Paul Stamets didn’t think that you couldn’t improve upon a cardboard box.

You have an idea. It’s probably not new. It only has to be different – and only just a little. I doubt that 5 billion people are all going to want the same thing.

So sayeth the StickMonkey.
