The novelist Ian Fleming created both characters. “Casino Royale,” which introduced the world to James Bond, was published in 1953. He penned “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in 1964.
“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” was turned into a movie and released in December of 1968. It wasn’t until 2006 that a movie by the same name of Fleming’s “Casino Royale” made its way to theatres.
Box office figures for “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” seem impossible to find – although IMDb notes that USA rentals of the movie has generated over $7 million. On the other hand, James Bond movies, novels and related merchandise has generated over $7 billion. (You can see a breakdown here.)
Quite the storyteller, that Fleming chap. You have to wonder if Chitty Chitty Bang Bang might have had a few extra secret buttons Dick Van Dyke never knew about.
So sayeth the StickMonkey.
