It was right about this time 10 years ago that I left Hawaii.
I had been recruited by a dot com in San Francisco, and I was going to become a millionaire. Woot!
So, I got there and I had the most absolutely wonderful experience of my life – which I wouldn’t trade for anything – even though it ended with me fleeing from the dot com meltdown into the high desert city of Tucson, Arizona.
Most of the time I don’t get homesick for Hawaii. Every once in a while, I do get a pang. Interestingly enough, I find it’s not necessarily the physicality of the islands – but the concept of Hawaii that I miss the most.
Luckily for me, Houston is hospitable to some kinds of tropical plants. I’ve got a couple of plumeria trees growing on my back yard lanai. They started blooming last week.
Smells like Hawaii.
